Do kitchen cabinets come in 17 inch width or will I have to make them?

HRLady asked:

I am adding some cabinets to my kitchen along a wall that has dimensions of 84 inches long by 17 inches deep. I want to add more cabinets and a desk area. I want to know if stores like home depot or lowes have these prefab or if I’ll have to make them myself.

    Go to Lowes and Home Depot and find out!
    If you know how to make them yourself already then you’re better off anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Hi Y'all Says:

    Most companies don’t make 17″ wide cabinets. You would have to find a custom cabinet maker. Or you could get a 15″ cabinet and put a 2″ filler on the side of it.

    @HRLady –

    I’m a little confused by your question… In your question you ask whether or not stock cabinets can be purchased in 17″ widths but then you say that you want to add cabinets across a wall that is 84″ long (I’m assuming you are referring to its width) by 17″ in depth.

    I’ll do my best to answer both possible scenarios here:

    [1] Stock (aka “boxed”) cabinets are usually available in widths of 12″, 15″, 18″ etc (basically, in 3 inch increments). So, if you need a cabinet that is 17″ wide then you have a few choices… a. Make the cabinet yourself (or have it made) to this dimension b. Do as “Hi Y’all” said above and add-on a 2″ wide filler strip to a 15″ wide cabinet or c. Buy an 18″ wide cabinet and see if 1″ can be trimmed off of the face-frame stiles to get to the 17″ dimension.

    **NOTE: I’m assuming you are referring to face-framed cabinets which have a solid wood face attached to the cabinet box (aka carcass). Most face-frame cabinets have “stiles” (which are the two vertical parts of face-frame) that are oversized. By that, I mean, that they are wider than the box itself. If they are more than 1″ larger than the box width then you can trim off 1″ to get to a box size that is 17″ wide.

    [2] If you were referring to needing a cabinet that is 17″ in depth then this will require a custom cabinet be made. Most upper cabinets (aka wall-hung) are about 12″ in depth and base cabinets are made to be 24″ in depth.

    A 17″ deep cabinet is far from standard and will require that you either make the cabinet yourself or hire a cabinetmaker.

    To your success,
